Welcome to the French Department

Bonjour et bienvenue sur le site du départment de Français

At Cumnor House we strongly believe that the learning of a foreign language is an educational, cultural and valuable experience for all pupils.

We aim to maintain and stimulate pupils’ interest in the French language and its culture as well as to develop knowledge and understanding of the subject. We pride ourselves in providing our students with the capacity to interact with native speakers of French; our students are regularly writing to French pupils at a school in Annecy.

We want our pupils to have fun and enjoy learning French through a wide range of teaching strategies and activities while reinforcing the importance and relevance of languages.

We teach French using interactive whiteboards and students can use Languages websites from both school and home. Some French lessons are taught in the ICT room or in classrooms using the Netbooks to allow students to prepare project work such as PowerPoint presentations. This type of exercise provides the opportunity for them to focus on more independent learning. Pupils also have access to a Language Lab using Schoolshape where they have the possibility to practice for the oral / aural CE and Scholarship examinations.

Emphasis is placed on the four skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, which are tested at Common Entrance and Scholarship level.

We seek to:

  • Develop pupil’s communication skills in a fun and stimulating learning environment.
  • Provide enjoyment, intellectual stimulation and a sense of real achievement;
  • Develop students’ ability to communicate effectively and to develop their understanding of other cultures.
