Heads of Departments

Andrew Rose (Head of English)

Andrew has been at Cumnor as Head of English since leaving The City in 1993. He has served on the school’s management team and was the coach of the 1st XV. He has also been directing the school’s Shakespeare play for ten years now and, because of his passion for General Knowledge, he continues to challenge the community with his ever-popular Parents’ Quiz. He is married to Fiona, a midwife at the PRH in Haywards Heath. They have one son, Archie, who is currently in the Pre-Prep.

Nick Tier (Head of Maths)

After a degree in European Economics and 8 years selling advertising space for magazines and newspapers in London, Nick became engaged to Emily and decided to return to the teaching career that he had begun after leaving school. He completed his PGCE before working for 2 years at Crosfields in Reading, before joining Windlesham House as a Maths Teacher. After 8 years he moved to Cumnor as Head of Maths and Housemaster. He has two children at Cumnor.

Yvonne Turner (Head of Science)

Zimbabwean born, Yvonne trained in Zimbabwe and South Africa as a teacher before moving to the UK in 2004 where she undertook numerous jobs both in education and other sectors. She moved to Cumnor in September 2005 from Copthorne Prep and has been Head of Science for the last 4 years. She plays an active role in the Games department coaching netball, hockey and rounders through the year.

Nathalie Landroit (Head of French)

Nathalie was born and educated in France. Upon graduating from the University of Lyon with a Diploma in Translation, Nathalie moved to the UK in 1996 and studied at the University of Brighton for a Degree in Linguistics with Spanish and then for a PGCE. She was a Secondary and ‘A’ Level French and Spanish teacher until her appointment to the French Department in 2008 at Cumnor House. She has a keen interest in travel and languages and aims to visit as many countries as possible!

JANE SYKES (Head of Classics)

Jane grew up in Kent and read Law and Sociology at Exeter University. After working in HR and Marketing, she and her husband moved gradually further north, undertaking a variety of roles within boarding schools at both prep and senior level. Since 2001 she has taught Latin, first in Yorkshire and latterly in Sussex. Jane’s favourite Latin expression is ‘veni, vidi, vici’ and she enjoys crosswords in her spare time. She is married to Jeremy and they have three children.

Carolynn Rail (Head of Geography)

Carolynn grew up in Zimbabwe and then majored in English, Psychology and Media at The University of Cape Town before completing her PGCE. She soon moved to England where she worked at a number of secondary schools in London. In 2007 she relocated to Cumnor with particular focus on Sports coaching and a Year 5 class. This quickly led to roles within the Geography and English department before taking on the Head of Geography post in 2008.

Dougie White (Head of Religious Studies)

Dougie grew up in South Africa and studied at the Johannesburg College of Education, obtaining a qualification in Secondary education, with specialism in Design and Technology. He is married to Mandy and has two energetic sons. He immigrated to England and completed a Diploma in Youth Work ministry at Oasis College in London. He then spent 8 years in church based ministry in the South of England before joining Cumnor House in September 2005 as Head of Religious Studies.

Rosi Robinson (Head of Art)

Rosi has been Head of Art at Cumnor for the last 25 years and has been teaching for 40! Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, she graduated from Vassar College, N.Y., U.S.A. with a BA Hons. in History and took her PGCE at Redland College in Bristol. Then for nine years she taught in primary schools in Bristol as a class teacher and Art specialist. She also freelanced on BBC Local Radio. Rosi is a practising batik artist and has exhibited, lectured, run workshops and travelled to China, Japan, Indonesia, Germany, France, Belgium, Canada, the U.S.A and throughout the UK. Rosi is a mother of two ex-Cumnorians (Laurie and Georgie). She is also a proud grandmother.

David Brown (Director of Music)

Originally from the Midlands, David studied Music at the Birmingham Conservatoire and went on to do a Post-Graduate course in Singing at the Royal College of Music, London under Miss Kathleen Livingstone. Although David is Director of Music at Cumnor House School, he continues to perform professionally both chorally and as a soloist. He is married to Alex and they have two young children.

Ray Gabbard (Director of Drama)

Ray joined Cumnor House as Director of Drama in 2010. Formerly he was Head of Drama at Farlington School for Girls and he has taught from KS2 to Six Form College. Ray has also worked as a professional actor and singer and has performed principle roles in musical theatre, stage, and opera. He has performed all across the U.S.A (including the Broadway production of Phantom of the Opera), Germany, and England. Ray has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from the College of Idaho, a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Arizona State University and has recently qualified as a Sports Massage Practitioner from the Southern School of Massage. Ray is married to Jacquie and they have two children.

David Newbery (Head of ICT)

David has been at Cumnor for the last six years, having spent many years in London, first studying singing and composition at Trinity College of Music, then as a teacher at the Eaton House group of schools where he was in charge of ICT and sport. He is currently Head of ICT, teaches DT, was Assistant Director of Music and has been a form teacher until this year. He coaches hockey and takes Colts football, rugby and cricket. He is married to Barbara and they have twin boys.

Tony Woods (Head of DT)

Tony has been Head of Design and Technology since setting the department up in 2002. Before this he worked as a teacher in Croydon, Edenbridge and Tonbridge. He enjoys an active role taking teams in Football, Rugby and Cricket. He is married to Sibylla and has three children; Autumn, Archer and Ruby.

Maureen Boyland (Head of Learning Support)

Maureen grew up in Zambia and studied Geography at the University of Rhodesia. This led to a PGCE and Head of Geography posts in schools in Zimbabwe. In 2001 her family arrived in England and her children, now 15 and 17, joined Cumnor, whilst she spent a year studying for a diploma in SpLD at HADC. She became Head of Geography at Cumnor in 2003, a role she relinquished after 6 years to become Head of Learning Support. She is married to a healthcare management consultant and they live in Kingston.

Ross Millard (Director of Sport)

Ross is into his seventh year at Cumnor having spent the previous 10 years living in Manchester. In that time he was a professional footballer with Manchester United but was unfortunate to pick up a back injury that stopped him from furthering his career. He then went on to coach in the club’s football academy for 6 years where he gained the UEFA “A” licence. He met his wife Sarah, an old Cumnorian, whilst living in Manchester and they are now based in Burgess Hill. They have a young daughter.
